The women's lacrosse team fell 19-6 to the third-ranked University of Maryland on Saturday afternoon.

Playing their fourth consecutive road game, the Bears started out slow and allowed the Terrapins to take an early 3-0 lead to start the first half.

Despite the early deficit, Brown came out with focus and passion.

"We came out really strong," said Meghan Markowski '10. "Our defense did a great job of making them take tough shots, and our goalie made a lot of good saves."

Even with Brown's strong effort, the Terrapins were quicker on the offensive end than their nickname suggests, firing 54 shots in the 60-minute contest. To combat the offensive attack, Brown's defense had to try to weather the storm.

"They were a really talented team," said defensemen Val Sherry '09.

Markowski put Brown on the board with her second goal of the season with 14 minutes remaining in the first half. Maryland continued its relentless attack, finding the back of the net six times in less than five minutes.

But the Bears refused to give in and started to settle in offensively. Brown scored the final three goals of the half to cut their deficit to 9-4.

"After we scored our first goal, we realized we had a chance," Markowski said. "We started forcing turnovers and used that to our advantage to score some goals."

Co-captain Mimi DeTolla '08 and Jesse Nunn '09 both scored, and Molly McCarthy '10 added a goal and one of her two assists during the run.

" We played a lot better towards the end of the first half," Sherry said. "We had a stretch where we played pretty well."

The Bears maintained the momentum that they had created at the end of the first half and emerged from the locker room with a lot of energy. Co-captain Ali Holland '08 scored on a free position goal to get Bruno to a score of 9-5 just three minutes into the second half.

Maryland responded with two more goals, but with 21:28 to go in the game, Holland added her second goal to make the score 11-6.

Holland's goal was the last score Bruno was able to put on the board. The Terrapins scored eight unanswered goals to cruise to victory.

"The game was really up and down the field, and we got a little tired," Markowski said. "They were tough to stop once they got going."

Goalie Melissa King '08 did her best to hold off the high-powered Terrapins, posting a season-high 15 saves.

The Bears return to action for their home-opener Friday afternoon against Temple University at 4 p.m. The game is the first of a four-game home stand before Brown begins its Ivy League schedule.

"We are really excited to be at home after being away for four games," Markowski said. "We are looking to beat Temple and to have a big crowd."
