Shanghai owner to open new sushi restaurant in December

Need more sushi? The owner of Shanghai is opening a new sushi joint across the street from the Asian restaurant on Thayer Street in December. Featuring an 1,800 gallon shark tank, Shark will seat up to 130 diners hungry for sushi and hibachi – Japanese food cooked on grills in front of the diners. Ray Hugh, who also opened Xtreme Pizza and Wings at 272 Thayer St. in July, said he doesn’t yet know how much Shark’s fare will cost.

Haruki Kibe, owner of three Japanese restaurants in Rhode Island – including Haruki Express, a take-out sushi restaurant which opened on Waterman Street in June – said Shark would “definitely” affect his business. Though Haruki Express’s prices are lower than the prices at Haruki restaurants in Cranston and the Wayland Square neighborhood of Providence, Kibe said, he didn’t know how Shark’s prices will compare.

“How they mark up the price – that’s their business,” Kibe said.
