To the Editor:
With the planned construction of a new School of Engineering and a new Division of Applied Mathematics building, it is my hope that consideration be given to determine the feasibility of utilizing geothermal heat pump technology.
Geothermal heat pumps have proven themselves to be reliable and efficient systems that take advantage of the constant temperature of the ground to provide heating/cooling from a renewable energy source.
Our engineering students would gain much knowledge and experience from studying the performance of such a system as well as determining the percent reduction of its carbon footprint vs. a conventional system.
Other colleges have implemented standard geothermal heat pump systems as well as hybrid systems; it’s time for us to consider incorporating such a system as part of a new building design for our campus.
