The faculty voted to approve a proposal from the literary arts program to become the Department of Literary Arts during its March 1 meeting. The proposal will now go to the Corporation — the University’s highest governing body — for approval at its May meeting.

University officials read Brown e-mails

The University has accessed e-mails sent and received on brown.edu accounts 11 times since July 2008, according to David Sherry, chief information security officer for Computing and Information Services. According to the University’s e-mail policy, Brown accounts may be accessed “by authorized University officials for purposes related to University business.”

DUGs see increase in popularity on campus

The number of active departmental undergraduate groups has increased from 24 to 49 since July 2009. According to the Plan for Academic Enrichment’s October 2010 status report, administrators have worked to strengthen “the number and effectiveness of student department undergraduate groups by developing websites, guidelines and coordination with concentration advisers.”

Chaplain looks back on 21 years

In suite 410 of J. Walter Wilson, amid colorful artwork, classic furniture and family photographs of Brown community members, sits Reverend Janet Cooper Nelson, the University chaplain. Appointed chaplain in 1990, Cooper Nelson has been a part of the Brown community for the past 21 years. She serves not only as director of the Office of the Chaplains and Religious Life but also as a personal resource for the students, faculty and staff whose images adorn her walls.
