Winter sports teams just heating up

As the fall sports season winds to a close, we now turn our attention to winter sports at Brown. Here’s the scoop on what we can expect from Brown sports this coming winter. Men’s Basketball The men’s basketball team will have a lot to live up to following an impressive 2007-08 season, in which the Bears set a school record as they went 19-10, and finished second with an 11-3 mark in Ivy League play.

Leslie Springmeyer ’12 finished her outstanding first season in convincing fashion, tallying a hat trick while also notching an assist in the field hockey team’s 4-1, season-ending win over Yale, which gave the Bears their only Ivy League win of the season.

Football’s offense stalls for first loss

On Saturday, the football team (5-3, 4-1 Ivy) suffered its first Ivy League loss of the season, when a smothering Yale defense and mistakes by the Brown offense handed the Bears a 13-3 loss. The team is now in a three-way tie atop the Ivy League standings, along with Harvard and Penn.

Football grabs Ivy League lead with win over Penn

In a matchup against the only other undefeated team in Ivy League play, the football team (5-2, 4-0 Ivy) prevailed Saturday with a 34-27 win over Penn (4-3, 3-1) in Philadelphia. Quarterback and co-captain Michael Dougherty ’09 led the offensive attack with four touchdown passes, two of which went to receiver Buddy Farnham ’10, who had six receptions for 120 yards.

Women’s crew grabs top 15 at Princeton Chase

On Sunday, the defending national champion women’s crew team competed at the Princeton Chase, the team’s second competition of the fall. In the Varsity Eight race, two Brown squads finished in the top 15.

Big Red makes small showing against Bruno Saturday

At the end of the first quarter, the football team trailed Cornell 7-0, after the offense had gained just nine total yards while failing to get a single first down. The Bears turned it around, though, and dominated the final three quarters to come away with a 27-7 victory.

Football defense back on track for Princeton win

After back-to-back losses to non-conference opponents, the football team (3-2, 2-0 Ivy) came into Saturday’s game looking to get its season back on track, resuming its Ivy League schedule at Princeton. Brown did just that, outscoring the Tigers (2-3, 1-1 Ivy) 17-0 in the second half to run away with a 31-10 victory.

Men’s water polo finishes with perfect record

For the first time in program history, the men’s water polo team finished with a perfect record in the CWPA Northern Division, when they downed Connecticut College by a score of 17-7 to finish with a 7-0 record in division play. Corey Schwartz ’11, Grant LeBeau ’09 and Robbie Yass ’12 led the way for Brown with three goals each, while Max Lubin ’12 turned in a solid effort in defense with four saves.

Equestrian starts strong

The equestrian team got its season off to a good start with a second-place finish out of ten teams at University of Rhode Island’s Faith Hill Farm on Saturday. Brown spent much of the show in third place, and eventually finished just three points behind host URI for the win.
