The wrestling team competed in the Journeymen/BRUTE Northeast Collegiate Duals on Saturday. The team took fourth place after losing to Binghamton University, 31-9; American University, 30-12; and the No. 5 University of Missouri, 41-3. “They are all good teams,” said Assistant Coach Ed Gutnik.

The wrestling team started its season at the Brute Binghamton Open in New York last Saturday. The team sent 26 wrestlers to the tournament, which also featured Ivy League rivals Cornell, Columbia and Princeton. Although no team score was kept, the Bears turned in solid performances.

The Brown cross country teams competed in the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships last Saturday. The men finished in 12th place with 341 points while the women placed 10th with 301 points.

Volleyball improves but loses final two bouts

The volleyball team hoped to end its 2008 season with two wins on the road. But the Bears could not pull out the upset over Princeton on Friday night, and they lost their final match of the season to Penn the following day. Despite the losses, the team showed a five-win improvement from last season, going from a 7-17 record in 2007 to 12-14 this season.

Seniors Meyers, Yess win final home volleyball match

The two seniors on the volleyball team, captain and setter Natalie Meyers ’09 and outside hitter Lyndse Yess ’09, stepped on to the court on Saturday, knowing it was going to be their last time playing in a Brown jersey in the Pizzitola Gymnasium. As the referee blew the whistle, they began their last home match of their collegiate careers.

The volleyball team had a tough weekend at two Ivy League rivals, losing 3-1 to Dartmouth on Friday and 3-0 to Harvard on Saturday. The Bears had faced both teams at home earlier this season, taking down the Crimson 3-1 but losing to the Big Green 1-3.

The volleyball team (11-9, 3-5 Ivy) has had three consecutive weekends when it has followed a Friday night win with a Saturday loss. The latest split came last weekend on the road against Columbia (6-12, 0-8 Ivy) on Friday and Cornell (7-11, 6-2 Ivy) on Saturday.

Inconsistency continued to plague the volleyball team (10-8, 2-4 Ivy) last weekend, as Brown again failed to pick up consecutive wins. After defeating Penn in a five-game match, 25-20, 19-25, 25-17, 17-25, 15-10, the team’s defense collapsed on Saturday as Princeton swept the Bears in three games, 25-19, 25-14 and 25-16.

The weekend was bittersweet for the volleyball team (9-7, 1-4 in Ivies), who hosted two Ivy League matches, against Harvard on Friday and Dartmouth on Saturday. Bruno was finally able to break its five-game losing streak on Friday by beating Harvard in four games, 25-19, 23-25, 30-28 and 25-19.
