No. 25 m. soccer, unbeaten, shuts out Rhody Rams

The men’s soccer team (4-0-1) traveled 30 miles south to take on URI (2-4-0) Saturday night, pulling away early and cruising to a 5-0 win. The offense was firing on all cylinders with five goals from four different players, and the defense continued its dominance, not allowing a single goal in the past four games of play.

M. soccer scores big weekend on rain-soaked field

The men’s soccer team (3-0-1) captured the outright Adidas-Brown Classic title after two wins against Southern Methodist University (2-2-0) and Adelphi University (1-1-2) this past weekend. Austin Mandel ’12 led the way on offense, scoring two goals, and Sean Rosa ’12 received the tournament’s Offensive MVP award with a goal and an assist.

With 17 underclassmen on a roster of 28, the men’s soccer team knew it would be young and inexperienced coming into the 2009 season. But the past four years have been among the most successful in the team’s history, and the team’s returning players are used to experiencing success.

The softball team (10-18, Ivy 4-8) began its four-game series in Hanover, N.H., on a positive note with a 2-1 win but fell in the next three games to Dartmouth (18-14, 9-3 Ivy) as the Bears were outscored 20-6 in those three losses.

The women’s tennis team rolled to a 6-1 victory over St. John’s and a 7-0 whitewashing of Albany on Saturday at the Pizzitola Center to extend the team’s winning streak to eight matches. The Bears (12-2) controlled the two matches from start to finish, losing only 16 games in six doubles matches.

The wrestling team finished off its season with three fourth-place finishes in the consolation bracket at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships at Penn this past weekend.

The women’s swimming and diving team finished the season with a disappointing seventh-place finish at the Ivy League Championship over the weekend. The meet took place last Thursday through Saturday at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow, N.Y. “We know that this place was not a true representation of our team’s abilities,” Kelley Wisinger ’11 said.

M. basketball wiped out by Big Red

The men’s basketball team struggled this weekend to build on its first conference win, Feb. 14, over Princeton, as Columbia and Cornell each took a game from the Bears. The Bears (7-17, 1-9 Ivy) fell to Columbia (11-12, 6-4 Ivy) Friday night at the Pizzitola Center by a score of 70-57.

Wrestlers sweep weekend

The wrestling team finished off its final road trip of the season on Saturday with a 3-0 sweep over Boston University, Harvard and Wagner, including a 49-0 shut-out against Wagner. After a win at Princeton last weekend, the Bears have rattled off four wins in a row heading into the final weekend of the regular season.
