Fencers finish 13th at NCAA Championship

A record six fencers represented Bruno at the NCAA Division I Championship last week and led the team to a 13th place overall finish in a field of 25 schools. Teddy Weller ’13 and Kelly McGuire ’13 led the way for the Bears, racking up nine points each. Christine Whalen ’15, Barrett Weiss ’15, Kathryn Hawrot ’14 and Cory Abbe ’13 also competed in the tournament.

Wrestlers take on the best at NCAAs

In the final act of the 2011-12 season, wrestlers Dave Foxen ’12 and Ophir Bernstein ’15 competed in the NCAA Tournament Thursday in St. Louis. Both wrestlers went 0-2 at the tournament and were eliminated, but despite the losses, Head Coach Dave Amato said he was pleased with the effort shown by both wrestlers.

In the final seconds of his championship match, wrestler Dave Foxen ’12 upset the No. 4 seed in the 174-pound weight class at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championship March 4. In doing so, he became the first unseeded wrestler in any weight class to win the championship since 1963 and will represent Brown in the NCAA Championship. For his historic upset victory, The Herald has named Foxen Athlete of the Week.

Jacobson ’15 shoots into top 10 rookie scorers

Men’s ice hockey forward Ryan Jacobson ’15 played a major part in the team’s 4-2-2 record over winter break, scoring five goals in the team’s eight games. He is currently the team’s second-leading scorer and is tied for second in points. In a 4-1 game against St. Lawrence on Jan. 15, Jacobson scored his eighth of the season, which propelled him into Brown’s all-time top 10 goals scored by a rookie. For his offensive contributions as a rookie, The Herald has named Jacobson Athlete of the Break.
