R.I. public colleges may implement RIPTA fee

  Students at Rhode Island’s public colleges and universities may soon see a tuition increase of $100 as part of a measure to raise funds for the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority. A bill currently under discussion in the Rhode Island Senate Finance Committee would assess a $50 per-semester public transportation fee on students, a measure that has raised concerns in the state’s higher education community.

Bill looks to boost R.I. gambling industry

The Rhode Island Senate is slated to vote this week on a measure that would allow Newport Grand Slots to host casino-style table games. The proposal passed the state House of Representatives with a 69-3 vote March 6. If it passes the Senate, the measure will be placed on the November ballot for voter approval.


Actress Streep donates $10,000

After winning an Academy Award for Best Actress last month, Meryl Streep donated $10,000 to Segue Institute for Learning, a public charter school in Central Falls, R.I., in honor of fellow nominee Viola Davis, a Central Falls native whose niece attends Segue. The donation boosted the school’s effort to raise enough money to buy the building it currently occupies, which the bankrupt city is selling as part of its financial recovery plan.
