Update: Avi Schaefer ’13 struck, killed by car

 Avi Schaefer ’13 was struck and killed by a vehicle at approximately 1:40 a.m. Friday morning at the intersection of Thayer and Hope streets, according to Vice President for Public Affairs and University Relations Marisa Quinn. The driver of the vehicle was charged with drunken driving Friday afternoon, she said.

U. seeks to streamline grant-seeking process and cut costs

As part of its plans to reduce next year’s budget, the University is looking to streamline research support and boost its revenue by securing more grant funding. The academic administration team of the Organizational Review Committee — one of the 12 teams formed last September to identify ways to cut $14 million from the University’s budget — outlined its recommendations in a report released Feb. 2.

Supercomputer already swamped

After almost three months in operation, Brown’s multimillion-dollar supercomputer is running at full capacity, according to Professor of Applied Mathematics Jan Hesthaven, the director of the computational center. Spurred by research projects initiated by many of the University’s science departments, use of the computing cluster has increased by about 50 percent since Nov. 20, when the cluster was officially unveiled, Hesthaven said.

SciLi offers new space for science learning

The new science resource center on the third floor of the Sciences Library will open Feb. 5 after months of extensive renovations shuttered the floor during the fall, Dean of the College Katherine Bergeron will announce in a campus-wide e-mail Friday. The multi-purpose space will serve as the home base for science education, outreach and support and provide a state-of-the art technological hub for the entire Brown community.

Brown starts aid efforts in Haiti disaster’s wake

In the two weeks since an earthquake devastated Haiti, the Brown community has begun mobilizing to aid the worldwide relief efforts. With immediate support from students, faculty and staff, President Ruth Simmons launched the Haiti Crisis Response Committee Jan. 14 to coordinate extensive relief efforts and to provide recommendations to the University about further measures the community can take to assist the Caribbean nation.

U. to review policies after party fight

Details continue to emerge about the party last Saturday in Alumnae Hall that led to the arrest of four men in attendance. According to the official Providence Police Department report obtained Wednesday by The Herald, an individual threatened to return to a Brown party with a handgun. The University and Brown police are conducting separate reviews of event management in response to the incident.
