Get Herald RSS117 students were elected to be members of the Rhode Island Alpha of Phi Beta Kappa on April 7.
Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest undergraduate honors society in the nation. The Rhode Island Alpha chapter has been a part of Brown since 1830, according to the Encyclopedia Brunoniana.
"We have an induction ceremony twice in the year, once for juniors earlier in the second semester, and then once during Commencement weekend for seniors," said Professor of Economics George Borts, faculty secretary of Phi Beta Kappa.
The Registrar provides a list of qualifying students, who are then voted on anonymously by the junior members. "This year's senior class had slightly more than previous years. Admission really depends on the number of people who qualify each year," Borts said.
A senior who would have completed the normal seven semesters prior to graduation would be expected to complete a minimum of 26 courses. A minimum of 20 of those classes would have to be grades of A or S with Distinction, Borts said. "Admission is determined solely on academic achievement. If you had a C, you lose an A - a C immunizes an A," he said, adding that the society has admitted students with C's on their transcripts.
