RIDOT extends commuter rail to North Kingstown

Next Monday, at 4:50 a.m., a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority train will embark from the Wickford Junction train station, marking the opening of a new commuter rail station in North Kingstown. Two city committees approve freezing COLAs for retirees

Following Providence Mayor Angel Taveras’ proposed budget address Monday, two city council committees — the subcommittee on pension sustainability and the ordinance committee — unanimously recommended that the city council pass Taveras’ Providence Pension Protection Plan, which would suspend cost-of-living increases for all city retirees. The council is set to vote on the measure tomorrow night.

Taveras proposes $638 million budget

At the annual city budget address last night, Mayor Angel Taveras presented the Providence City Council with a $638.4 million budget proposal that prioritizes education, economic development and public safety. Taveras reiterated his calls for municipal pension reform and increased contributions from the city’s nonprofits. Though a deal between Providence and the University has yet to be reached, parts of the budget rely on the outcome of the negotiations.
