Bears suffer first loss of season to UMass

The No. 20 men’s lacrosse team suffered its first defeat Saturday, coming up short against the No. 9 University of Massachusetts at Amherst 9-6. The 50th game in the history of the regional rivalry went into halftime with the score all square, but the Minutemen (4-0) scored three-straight goals in the third quarter to build a 7-4 lead. From there, UMass never looked back and posted their fourth win of the season.

Broken heart: Bears dismantle Pioneers

The women’s lacrosse team (1-0) kicked off the 2011 season with a dominant 21-8 victory at Sacred Heart (0-1) Saturday. Nine different players got on the score sheet, with goals coming from both seniors and first-years alike. The leading scorers were Kaela McGilloway ’12 and Breonna Hudgins ’14, both of whom scored five goals apiece.

Bears light up Quinnipiac in season opener

The men’s lacrosse team (1-0) started its 2011 campaign Saturday with a statement win. The Bears jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in a commanding 13-4 victory over Quinnipiac (0-1) at Meister-Kavan Field.

Coming off a 2010 season in which the men’s lacrosse team finished 8-6, won five of its last six regular season games and finished in a four-way tie for the Ivy League championship, the Bears are hungry to get on the field once more.

M. lax defeats No. 8 Cornell, finally gets marquee win

The men’s lacrosse team rose up to beat No. 8 Cornell, 13-10, Saturday in Ithaca, N.Y. The Bears outscored the Big Red, 9-2, in the second and third quarters, and then survived a furious Cornell rally in the fourth behind stout goaltending from Matt Chriss ’11, giving the program a badly-needed statement victory.

Against winless PC, Bears win inaugural Ocean State Cup

Providence College came into the men’s lacrosse game against Brown with no wins on the season. PC had nothing to lose. The Bears, (5-5, 2-2 Ivy) were looking to gain momentum going into key Ivy League contests. In a game that included a broken stick, an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and a number of shots off the crossbar, Bruno prevailed with a 14-7 win to claim the first-ever Ocean State Cup.

Brown drops two games, but one was a ‘victory in defeat’

In their last two home games of the season, the women’s lacrosse team lost to both Cornell on Friday and Boston College on Sunday in two close matchups. Cornell edged out Brown with just 1.5 seconds left on the clock, and BC beat Brown with 11 seconds left in the second overtime. But the Bears left the field Sunday feeling positive about their performance against a strong BC team.
