On Monday morning in a small room on the second floor of the Urban Environmental Lab, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-RI and Congressman David Cicilline, D-RI, met with members of the Climate Development Lab.

The symposium, organized by the Southeast Asian Studies Initiative, discussed  the current state of Southeast Asian representation within academia.  The event was organized in collaboration with the Brown University Singaporean Society, Vietnamese Students Association and Filipino Alliance.

“Our community is being marginalized,” said Phitsamay Sychitkokhong Uy, co-director of the center for Asian American Studies at University of Massachusetts-Lowell, during her keynote address on the experiences of Southeast Asian immigrants and refugees in the United States.

Hillelin’ with Melanin was created last semester by Nicole Spring ’20.5 (left) and Tessa Palisoc  ‘20 (right). The group recently hosted a Rosh Hashanah event and has planned a sunset barbeque picnic to celebrate Sukkot.

The Southeast Asian Studies Initiative is a fledgling student-led project with the goal of increasing academic visibility for Southeast Asia and its diasporas.

The Artemis Project was created to maintain girls’ interest in STEM. The free math and science courses aim to impact students’ college futures.
