Sunrise splits College Hill, Providence chapters

The Sunrise Movement’s Providence hub will split into a city chapter and a Brown-Rhode Island School of Design chapter over the coming weeks in an attempt to address long-standing concerns about the role of University activists in the Providence area, according to multiple organizers from the Providence chapter.

The protest Friday was one of more than 1600 Youth Climate Rallies that took place throughout the country. The movement was inspired by 16-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg.

Youth rally, strike for climate legislation

Young people from across Rhode Island joined a global climate strike Friday as they gathered outside the State House to demand immediate legislative action on climate change.

Sunrise Rhode Island leaders were arrested while engaged in civil protest in Washington D.C. last November and December. Members now advocate for the Green New Deal, which is legislation fighting for a transition to clean energy and protection for communities at risk from climate change.
