The following is an account of the crime event that took place this weekend, reported to The Herald by Deputy Chief of Police for the Department of Public Safety Paul Shanley:

 

Friday afternoon

A Providence resident was charged with receiving stolen goods after a DPS lieutenant found him walking away from a vehicle with shattered windows on the corner of Hope and Cushing streets.

At about 2:30 p.m., a lieutenant saw Jason Pench, 38, walking away from the car with a backpack. The lieutenant apprehended Pench at the intersection of Brook and Cushing streets. Upon further investigation, the officer determined that the backpack had been stolen from the vehicle.

The charge is a misdemeanor offense that could result in up to a year of jail time and up to $1,000 in fines.

Pench had a previous warrant out for his arrest from the Johnston Police Department.
