Letter: The Walk should house the performing arts

To the Editor:

The announcement that we will soon know the proposed site for a new and long overdue performing arts center is welcome news. Of the many potential locations on campus, my hope is that it will be sited somewhere on the Walk. The Walk was created in part to celebrate Brown with new and exciting large structures.

Though placing the new center on the west side of the Walk would require relocation of existing structures — either Sharpe House on the north end or some of the smaller buildings between Waterman Street and Angell Street to the south — it would be well worth the effort and expense. A Walk location would put performing arts at the center of campus, where they belong.

Due to an editing error, a previous version of this letter misidentified the building facing potential relocation as the Lucian Sharpe Carriage House, rather than Sharpe House. The Herald regrets the error.
