After a difficult showing at the New England Championship, the men's golf team sought to rebound at the Yale Invitational this weekend. But the Bears' plans were derailed by strong winds which Head Coach Michael Hughes said hit an inexperienced Brown team especially hard.
"We struggled this weekend. There were very difficult conditions. The wind was blowing, especially the first day, and we were also a bit overmatched by the course. A few of our players aren't used to playing in those kinds of conditions," Hughes said.
In part due to the strong wind, the Bears finished eighth of nine teams with a total score of 660. Penn won the event with a score of 612.
Despite the disappointing finish, Hughes focused on the positives.
"Michael Amato ('11) and John Giannuzzi ('10) played well. They had been struggling a bit but I thought they did well considering the conditions," Hughes said.
Amato shot a 157 while Giannuzzi shot a 166. The three freshmen on the team — J.D. Ardell '13, Chris Williams '13 and Jack Mylott '13 — scored 165, 172 and 179, respectively.
The Bears will look to improve at the Ivy League Championships at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J.
