Alex is one of two sports editors at The Herald. She is a junior from London, England and is concentrating in English Literature. She has previously worked as a senior staff writer, staff writer and contributing writer for The Herald covering men’s hockey, women’s hockey, baseball and women’s soccer. Outside of the Herald, Alex is on the figure skating team at Brown and loves to skate with her friends. She also enjoys gymnastics and ballet.

The men’s hockey team opened its season with a home-and-home series against Yale this weekend, earning a 5-1 victory at home Saturday after falling to the Bulldogs 3-2 in a close contest on the road Friday.

The men’s hockey team will open its 29-game schedule at Yale Friday, before returning home to host the Bulldogs the next night. The team hopes that this season will build on last year’s successes.

Right now, Meehan Auditorium, a dome-shaped arena located at the north of campus, is quiet. The ice lays freshly made under the glow of the lamps, punctuated by bright blue and red lines. Levels of empty stadium-style seats line the edges of the rink, and two scoreboards, one at each end of the building, are blank.

This spring break saw several impressive performances from Brown’s athletic teams. Highlights from this weekend included a 4-2 victory over Yale for the men’s tennis team, women’s lacrosse defeating Fresno State University 19-13 and 10 first place finishes for track and field at the Bryant Black and Gold Invitational.

Co-captain Tommy Marchin ’19 leads the men’s hockey team with 26 points this season and was recently awarded Second Team All-Ivy honors. The Bears will take on Cornell in the ECAC semifinals this afternoon in Lake Placid at 4 p.m.

The men’s hockey team defeated No. 5 Quinnipiac University, the top-seeded team in the ECAC, in two games of a best-of-three quarterfinal series this weekend to advance to the semifinals for the first time since the 2012-13 season.

At 103 minutes and 30 seconds, the men’s hockey team’s 6-5 triple overtime victory over Princeton was the longest game in program history and the 18th longest in NCAA Division I men’s hockey records.
