Profs balance research, teaching

As the University aims to compete with powerhouse research institutions – many of which have larger endowments – research experience has become a major factor in hiring and faculty tenure decisions. But faculty members remain conflicted as to whether the University’s increased emphasis on research and expansion – highlighted by the creation of the School of Engineering two years ago and the current development of a school of public health – has affected the quality of undergraduate teaching at the University.

U. officials discuss tax status at UCS general body meeting

University officials discussed Brown’s financial contributions to the city of Providence at Wednesday’s general body meeting of the Undergraduate Council of Students. The council also introduced a resolution on gender-neutral housing for first-year students to be voted on next Wednesday and considered the future of its relations with the Undergraduate Finance Board in light of recent backlash over its proposed constitutional amendment.

Corporation convenes to set budget

The Corporation will announce the University’s budget as well as tuition and fees for the next fiscal year at its meeting this weekend. Members of the Corporation, the University’s highest governing body, will cast votes following a review of President Ruth Simmons’ recommendations, which stem from a budgetary report by the University Resources Committee. The report will be made public following the meeting.

A proposed amendment to the Undergraduate Council of Students’ constitution has been met with mixed response, though many student group leaders have expressed concern that the amendment would place additional power in the council’s hands at the expense of other groups.

Jan. 2 10:35 a.m. An employee reported that two projectors, five laptops and five flash drives had been taken from 4 Richmond Square during a time span of 12 days. There were indications the site had been broken into. The case is under investigation.

Student and faculty reactions to the School of Engineering and the proposed school of public health have been tamer compared to the debate preceding the opening of the Med School in the 1970s. There is no consensus on whether the schools of engineering and public health indicate a drift from the University’s mission, and it remains unanswered if and how the shift in focus away from the central College affects Brown’s undergraduate experience.

Deferred admits take road less traveled

Most accepted students have the option of taking a gap year before arriving on College Hill, but some are required. For the latter group, admission to Brown is offered on the condition that they take time off and enroll the subsequent year.
