GSC discusses unions, international student needs

At yesterday’s monthly meeting, the Graduate Student Council discussed various GSC initiatives, and members of the Stand Up for Graduate Student Employees bargaining committee shared updates on current union efforts. 

Counseling and Psychological Services director discussed recent developments, including adding two student representatives to the student consultation board to address mental health needs.

The Graduate Student Council and Counseling and Psychological Services are collaborating on new programming to address graduate student mental health needs.

The rally, which took place on Tuesday afternoon, occurred before Stand Up for Graduate Student Employees bargaining committee members sat down to continue negotiating with University representatives over a union contract. Bargaining has been ongoing since last April, though the groups have yet to reach an agreement on several issues.

Brown graduate students protest for union contract

“What do we want? Contract! When do we want it? Now! If we don’t get it? Shut it down.” Chanting to beats banged out on pots and pans, over 100 graduate students and allies marched from the Van Wickle Gates to 225 Dyer Street yesterday.

The Graduate Student Council met for the first time this semester to elect a new vice president of advocacy. They also discussed improving access to mental health support for graduate students, and voted to approve several budget changes.

Entering the new semester, the Graduate Student Council elected a new vice president of advocacy and discussed programming to improve access to mental health support for graduate students. At its first monthly meeting of the year, the GSC elected Malcolm Thompson GS as vice president of advocacy after he ran unopposed.

Graduate students are advocating for support from CareerLAB, including better career advising for students not intending to go into academia and funding to attend conferences.

Graduate Student Council looks to CareerLAB for professional support

In a draft of the Graduate School Strategic Initiative released earlier this month, the Graduate Student Council proposed several changes to bolster career support for graduate students, many of which require collaboration with the CareerLAB.

Nominated by fellow CGS board members, Dean Andrew Campbell will lead the Council of Graduate Schools, an organization of nearly 500 colleges and universities across North America.
