M. soccer splits in S.C. tournament

The men’s soccer team traveled south to Mount Pleasant, S.C., last weekend for the Aaron Olitsky Memorial/Nike Soccer Classic. Brown finished 1-1, edging out Furman University 1-0 and falling behind early to the College of Charleston before losing 3-1. The Bears struggled in the first half of their match on Friday with Furman, recording only two shots on goal.

The athletic facilities on campus will be quiet this weekend, as all of Brown’s teams will be playing away from home. However, with no games to attend on campus, there are several games to watch on TV: #1 Southern California vs. #5 Ohio State College football teams generally play the toughest competition in the nation at the end of the season in bowl games, but OSU and USC are going to buck the trend and match up at the beginning of the season with 2008’s first must-watch college football game.

The men’s soccer team kicked off its season this weekend at the Adidas-Brown Classic. The No. 12 Bears opened up play Friday night with a 1-0 loss against No. 22 St. John’s and followed up with a 2-0 win against Villanova on Sunday. The game on Friday night drew a huge crowd thanks to a campus-wide barbecue and curious first-years, but the extra cheering and crowd support could not push the Bears past the Red Storm.

Three members of the gymnastics team – Chelsey Binkley ’11, Jen Sobuta ’09 and Vicki Zanelli ’11 – traveled south to Shreveport, La., for the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships this past weekend, and two came home with USA Gymnastics National All-American honors.

The softball team got off to a sluggish start in Charleston, S.C., this weekend, losing to Charleston Southern, 9-1, as well as dropping two close games to Toledo, 8-7, and Oakland University, 5-4. But the Bears (1-3) did come out of the South with its first win, beating Oakland, 5-4.
