The Open the Books Coalition held a teach-in and a rally this weekend in protest of the University’s confidential investment policy. The coalition, a joint effort between Students for a Democratic Society, the Student Labor Alliance and Brown Students for Justice in Palestine, was created to fight for a transparent endowment that the community would play a role in crafting, said Susan Beaty ’10, who moderated the teach-in.

UCS to institute instant runoff for internal elections

The Undergraduate Council of Students voted to approve a number of changes to the elections section in its Code of Operations. The proposed alterations would allow the UCS president to nominate members of the elections board, create an ad hoc appeals board to hear complaints filed against the elections board and institute an instant runoff voting system for the Council’s internal elections.

Salary freeze may be lifted for faculty and staff for next year

The University Resources Committee made a recommendation to the Corporation earlier this month that the freeze placed on faculty and staff salaries be lifted in the next year’s budget. Last year’s budget initiated a freeze on all University employee wages due to the harsh economic climate.


Group promotes electric car in R.I.

Project Get Ready, a national nonprofit initiative to promote the usage of plug-in electric vehicles, announced on Jan. 21 that it would add Rhode Island to its list of pilot sites. Rhode Island, the first entire state to become a pilot site, joins Houston, Indianapolis, Denver and Toronto.

The Metropolitan Providence Transit Enhancement Study — a joint project conducted by the Rhode Island Public Transportation Agency and Mayor David Cicilline’s ’83 office — was released Dec. 10. The study, which recommends future strategies for Providence public transport, represents the culmination of a four-year city initiative to improve public transportation.
