Undergraduate Vincent Zhou takes second at figure skating U.S. championships

Vincent Zhou, who entered Brown with the Class of 2023 but has been on leave, captured a silver medal in the short program at the 2021 U.S. Figure Skating Championships Jan. 17, qualifying him for the 2021 World Championships.

Humm said he is still unsure what he will do after retirement, but that he hopes to continue playing golf and do volunteer work.

Director of Athletic Communications Chris Humm announced his upcoming retirement after 32 years in the position. His retirement will take effect Dec. 31 and Brown has not yet started searching for a replacement. 

Starting Oct. 14, the Nelson Fitness Center is once again open to Brown community members since its closure this spring.

Nelson Fitness Center reopens with COVID-19 safety protocols

The Jonathan Nelson ’77 Fitness Center reopened Tuesday and welcomed members of the Brown community who are approved to be on campus this fall.

The NCAA previously ruled that fall student athletes would be eligible to play for an additional year, presenting senior athletes with a difficult decision.

In light of the cancellation of many fall athletic seasons and all Ivy League fall sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NCAA granted fall student-athletes an additional year of athletic eligibility.

The women’s fencing squad was reinstated to varsity status last Thursday, but the men’s team remains a club team.

The recent announcement that the University would reinstate the women’s equestrian and fencing teams to varsity status served as a relief from a disappointing year for the student-athletes on these squads.

Jordan Mann ’15, who walked on to the men’s track and field team while at Brown, has maintained an intense training schedule during COVID-19. In his spare time he has worked to become fluent in Japanese.

Former gymnastics coach Jackie Court, the first woman of color to coach at Brown, passed away April 12 at the age of 81. Court led the Bears for over 30 years and was accomplished both in her coaching and her fight for women’s equality in sports.
