Nelson Fitness Center reopens with COVID-19 safety protocols

The Jonathan Nelson ’77 Fitness Center reopened Tuesday and welcomed members of the Brown community who are approved to be on campus this fall.

The NCAA previously ruled that fall student athletes would be eligible to play for an additional year, presenting senior athletes with a difficult decision.

In light of the cancellation of many fall athletic seasons and all Ivy League fall sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NCAA granted fall student-athletes an additional year of athletic eligibility.

The women’s fencing squad was reinstated to varsity status last Thursday, but the men’s team remains a club team.

Jordan Mann ’15, who walked on to the men’s track and field team while at Brown, has maintained an intense training schedule during COVID-19. In his spare time he has worked to become fluent in Japanese.

Former gymnastics coach Jackie Court, the first woman of color to coach at Brown, passed away April 12 at the age of 81. Court led the Bears for over 30 years and was accomplished both in her coaching and her fight for women’s equality in sports.

Brown alums with Olympics aspirations shift sights to 2021

For three Brown alums, the Olympics had never been closer to reality — until the COVID-19 pandemic put a pause on their long-awaited dreams. On March 24th, it was announced that the 2020 Olympic Games, scheduled to take place in Tokyo, had been delayed until 2021 due to the pandemic.

Erin McCrudden will be working as an assistant coach for the field hockey team, alongside Head Coach Jill Reeve and fellow Assistant Coach Jillian Coppola.

The field hockey team has added former University of Louisville star and USA National Team member Erin McCrudden to its coaching staff, the team announced March 27. McCrudden will be working as an assistant coach alongside Head Coach Jill Reeve and fellow Assistant Coach Jillian Coppola. 

Heather Marini, former offensive quality control assistant coach, became the first female position coach in division 1 football when it was announced March 16 that she was promoted to the Bears' quarterbacks coach.

Heather Marini became the first female coach in Division 1 Football after Brown announced March 16 that she had been promoted to the Bears’ quarterbacks coach. 

Aughavin, a political science concentrator, led the men’s lacrosse team to a comeback victory over the defending national champions.
