Ivy League cancels sports due to COVID-19

The Ivy League presidents released a joint statement Wednesday afternoon unanimously announcing the cancellation of all spring athletic practices and competitions for the remainder of the academic year in an effort to combat the quickly spreading coronavirus.

Bruno finished the season tied for fourth in the Ivy league with Penn, just short of making the Ivy League Tournament.

Although the men’s basketball team played at Harvard and Dartmouth this weekend, its real opponent was Penn. Brown had to win both games and Penn had to lose at least one of its matchups against Cornell and Columbia for Bruno to clinch a trip to the Ivy League Tournament.

The Bears lost two home games this weekend, falling to Princeton by 22 points Friday and Penn by 5 points Saturday. Next weekend, they will play Harvard and Dartmouth in the final weekend of the regular season.

The men’s basketball team came up empty in its last home weekend of the season, losing to Princeton Friday and Penn Saturday. After dropping its last three games, Bruno is tied for fourth place in the Ivy League with Penn.

Every minute mattered as Bruno entered its weekend games at Columbia and Cornell in an effort to sweep the New York teams and solidify its chances at an Ivy League tournament appearance and an NCAA tournament bid.

Screaming fans, intense physicality and a championship run at stake characterized the men’s basketball team’s  nail-biting victories over Dartmouth and Harvard this weekend at the Pizzitola Sports Center.

The women’s soccer team earned a 14-2-3 overall record in 2019 and rolled through the Ivy League with a 6-0-1 mark.

The success of the women’s soccer team is no secret. This past season alone, the Bears won the highly coveted title of Ivy League Champions and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament.

The Bears grabbed their first two wins in the Ivy League competition, increasing their chances of qualifying for the postseason. They won against Cornell 74-63 Friday and beat Columbia Saturday 72-66.

The men’s basketball team entered the weekend knowing the reality of its situation — the Bears risked dropping to 0-4 in league play with two losses, which would make an Ivy League tournament appearance that much harder.

Bruno went back and forth with the Yale Bulldogs at home, but ultimately lost despite strong defensive efforts from both teams. The Bears will return to the court to take on Cornell Friday and Columbia Saturday.

The gravity of a men’s basketball upset against Yale was not lost on either team during Friday night’s matchup. Last week, the Bulldogs won the rivalry game on their homecourt and have won eight of the last 11 meetings at Brown, in addition to leading the historical series 111-53.

Women’s soccer’s Friday loss against Florida State University marked the end of Bruno’s first NCAA appearance following an Ivy League title win since 1994.

Significant preparation, an intense gaze and a nothing-to-lose attitude consumed and fueled the women’s soccer team and its hopeful fans into the second round NCAA game at Florida State University Friday evening.

A loss would have meant the end of the Bears’ season, but the win after 110 scoreless minutes took them to the tournament’s second round.
