Field hockey drops Ivy opener lacking rhythm

The field hockey team lost its Ivy League opener to Columbia, 2-0, on Saturday in New York. Catherine Campbell scored twice on penalty corners, and the Lions (2-2, 1-0 Ivy) outshot the Bears by a 22-3 margin to drop Bruno to 2-3 on the season.

The men’s soccer team (3-0-1) captured the outright Adidas-Brown Classic title after two wins against Southern Methodist University (2-2-0) and Adelphi University (1-1-2) this past weekend. Austin Mandel ’12 led the way on offense, scoring two goals, and Sean Rosa ’12 received the tournament’s Offensive MVP award with a goal and an assist.

The Director of Athletics had expected his department to lose about 30 coaches and staff members over the summer and was hardly sure if he would get the approval to replace exiting coaches given the University’s hiring freeze. To his relief, the athletic department was able to refill all coaching vacancies this summer.

The field hockey team lost its first two games of the season, falling to New Hampshire, 6-1, on Friday in its home opener on Warner Roof before suffering a 10-2 loss to Delaware on Sunday in Newark, Del.

Men’s water polo takes two out of three at MIT Invitational

In its season opener at the MIT Invitational last Saturday, the men’s water polo team narrowly edged Claremont-McKenna College, 8-7, to claim its first victory of the season. The Bears then staged an exciting come-from-behind rally against the University of Redlands, sealing its second win at 9-7. Their winning streak came to an end, however, in the final game against the Pacific. The early lead by the Tigers proved too much for the Bears to overcome, as they fell 14-4 in the end.

Three Brown athletes competed at the Division I NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship in June, led by Craig Kinsley ’11, who finished third in the nation in the javelin to earn All-American honors.
