Bears finish first at Iona meet

The men’s cross country team competed at the Iona Meet of Champions in New York City’s Van Cortlandt Park this Saturday after the season opener two weekends ago at the Nassaney Invitational. The women, who only competed at Nassaney – a meet hosted by Bryant University – captured a fourth-place team finish, while the men were ineligible to score as a team as only four of five starting runners crossed the finish line. The men’s squad had a stronger performance at Iona, where they finished first among 14 teams. 


Cross country teams rebuild after loss of graduating seniors

As both cross country programs prepare to kick off their seasons at Saturday’s Bryant Invitational, athletes and coaches are optimistic for the season despite having lost several valuable seniors. The women enter their second season with Women’s Cross Country Head Coach Mitchell Baker at the helm and look to improve upon last year’s seventh place finish at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championship.


Caldwell ’14 and Spooney ’14 star at Heps

The men’s and women’s indoor track teams both finished in fifth place at the Ivy League Heptagonal Indoor Championships this past weekend in Ithaca, N.Y. Heidi Caldwell ’14 and the men’s 4×400-meter relay team both turned in winning performances, while John Spooney’s ’14 second-place time in the 60-meter dash set a new school record.

While the rest of Brown slowly gears up for a new semester, the women and men on the indoor track teams are already moving at top speed. At the Joe Donahue Collegiate Indoor Games Jan. 27, the women captured first place, while the men finished second.

While Saturday’s unseasonable snowfall left many students shuffling in the cold between Halloween parties, the men’s and women’s cross country teams raced eight and six kilometers respectively in the swirling snow at the 2011 Ivy League Heptagonal Cross Country Championships at Princeton.


Top runners rest during Fall Weekend

The cross country teams traveled to the New England Championships in Boston Saturday with squads composed of younger and less-experienced competitors. The decision allowed the teams to simultaneously rest their strongest runners while gauging the progress of developing athletes.


Among large field, squads finish strong

Despite competition from 44 teams in the gold division at last Friday’s Paul Short Invitational, hosted by Lehigh University, the cross country teams were undeterred. The men finished seventh with 255 points, narrowly edging out Dartmouth. Earning 393 points, the women ran to a 12th place finish, besting the University of New Hampshire by 32 points.
