At a special faculty meeting Wednesday, Provost Richard Locke P’18 detailed a potential tri-semester model for the 2020-2021 academic year, but also explained that the University is preparing for the possibility of a fully remote fall semester.

Provost Richard Locke P'18 said that classes with more than 100 students will most likely have to be taught in a “flipped classroom, in which lectures are recorded, but smaller in-person discussion groups will be allowed.”

‘Next year may very likely look different’: What Brown could look like in three terms

While President Christina Paxson P’19 said she is “very cautiously optimistic” that an on-campus experience split into three terms could happen for the coming academic year, the safety of community members and the observance of public health guidelines will remain priorities.

Paxson will make a decision on the coming academic year by July 15, she wrote in an email to the University community Wednesday morning.

President Christina Paxson P’19 announced three possible scenarios for the 2020-2021 academic year in light of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic at Tuesday’s faculty meeting. 

During a Tuesday faculty meeting, President Paxson stressed that the University must be prepared for the campus to either reopen all residential halls in the fall, operate completely online or for a hybrid of the two.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the University has spent $21,800,000 on refunds of room and board and parking charges, as well as student wages, E-Gap Funds for travel and a line of credit for Brown Physicians, Inc.

The University has spent $21,800,000 on refunds of room and board and parking charges, as well as student wages, E-Gap Funds for travel and a line of credit for Brown Physicians, Inc., in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and students’ evacuation from campus.

President Paxson P’19 stated that, even with no current risks, the University has further prepared measures to deal with the coronavirus.
