President-elect Joe Biden has officially tapped Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo for Commerce Secretary, calling her “one of the most effective, forward-thinking governors in America.” Raimondo’s nomination coincides with an economic crisis, which has caused 22 million Americans to lose their jobs due to the pandemic. 

RI Gov. Gina Raimondo, a former venture capitalist, has been governor of the Ocean State since 2015.

President-elect Joe Biden will nominate Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo for commerce secretary, according to a Friday announcement. A former venture capitalist, Raimondo would be the Biden administration’s top liaison with the business community.

Gov. Gina Raimondo implemented a stay-at-home advisory and shortened some in-person business operating hours, among other measures, Thursday.

Gov. Raimondo orders postponement of Rhode Island primary

Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo signed an executive order Monday postponing the 2020 presidential primary and shifting to a predominantly mail ballot model in light of escalating COVID-19 concerns. The election will occur June 2, according to the order, over a month later than the original date of April 28. 

As of March 17, restaurants, bars and coffee shops in Rhode Island may only offer take-out or delivery services — prompting many to close.
