Grad students rally for improved benefits

Graduate students rallied on the steps of the Stephen Robert ’62 Campus Center Tuesday to reiterate demands for a union contract that would improve benefits for graduate student workers before delivering a book of letters from community members to the office of President Christina Paxson P’19.

University graduate students gathered on the steps of Campus Center Thursday. The group protested a proposed ruling that would give private universities the power to not recognize graduate student unions.

“Solidarity forever, solidarity forever, solidarity forever, the Union makes us strong,” graduate students sang  in support of unionization at the steps of the Stephen Robert ’62 Campus Center. Grad students and community members participated in a rally midday Thursday, many donning blue “Union Strong” T-shirts.

The Graduate Student Council received updates on unionization and re-elected President Alastair Tulloch GS and Vice President of Advocacy D’Ondre Swails GS at its third general body meeting of the semester. The council also filled all other board positions and listened to grievance procedure revisions.

Being a graduate student is tough. Students enrolled in Brown’s master’s, doctoral and pre-professional programs spend as many as six years conducting research, procuring funding and support for that research, teaching undergraduates and writing dissertations.

An election on graduate student unionization will be held within 15 business days of the filing. SUGSE and AFT believe a majority of eligible graduate students will support unionization.

SUGSE, AFT to file election petition

Stand Up for Graduate Student Employees and the American Federation of Teachers notified the University of their intention to file an election petition for graduate student unionization, according to an Oct. 11 AFT press release.

The GSC also voted to approve a slightly larger budget for this fall compared to last fall at the Graduate Student Lounge on Wednesday.

At its first general body meeting of the semester, the Graduate Student Council updated academic department representatives on new initiatives such as a revamped grievance procedure and a distinguished speaker series.

Stand Up for Graduate Student Employees and Brown Student Labor Alliance held a rally Wednesday afternoon on the Main Green, asking the University to approve a pre-election agreement that would lead to an election on unionization.
