GSC elects new Vice President of Advocacy

Entering the new semester, the Graduate Student Council elected a new vice president of advocacy and discussed programming to improve access to mental health support for graduate students. At its first monthly meeting of the year, the GSC elected Malcolm Thompson GS as vice president of advocacy after he ran unopposed.

Wednesday’s meeting took place in the newly renovated Graduate Student Lounge, located underneath Grad Center. The lounge has been outfitted with new flooring, cabinets, countertops and appliances.

GSC changes bylaws, elects new chair at final meeting of year

Sitting in the newly renovated Graduate Student Lounge, the Graduate Student Council elected a new chair of nominations, approved two revisions to its bylaws and shared updates on Executive Board initiatives in its final meeting of the semester.

Deans Vanessa Ryan and Maria Suarez spoke to students about the University working group’s progress in updating its leave of absence policies.

After serving two years as President of the Graduate Student Council, Alastair Tulloch GS did not run for reelection. He will be replaced by Kathryn Thompson GS, who is currently GSC treasurer and ran uncontested for the position.

Grad Student Council to bring speakers to campus

The Graduate Student Council announced at its meeting Wednesday evening that they invited two speakers to campus to give talks later this month. Marie Solange Lopes, a teaching fellow  at Stonehill College and founder of blog “The Corporate Sister,” will speak to grad students about personal finance Oct. 17.

At its first meeting of the semester, the Graduate Student Council outlined its priorities and budget for the semester. Adam Spierer GS also shared that graduate and medical students will be able to access group fitness classes for free at the Nelson Fitness Center.

In its last general body meeting of the semester Wednesday, the Graduate Student Council held elections for internal positions, heard presentations from guest speakers and received the executive board’s end-of-year report.

In the second meeting of the semester, the Graduate Student Council announced the election for a new Chair of Technology, updated members on the Graduate Student Strategic Initiative and discussed its relationship with the Graduate Student Union and the Medical Student Senate.

During the Graduate Student Council meeting, grad students discussed a wide array of issues including the council’s Graduate Student Strategic Initiative, increased funds for conferences, housing concerns and grad student representation in academic departments.
