A lifelong goal of mine is to become bilingual. Since coming to Brown, and especially since exploring more of the world and spending a semester abroad, I’ve come to see the value of knowing more than one language. In fact, I would argue that everyone should learn a second language.

Following a finding last year that enrollment in language courses has seen a 20 percent decrease over the last 10 years, the University has made strides toward addressing the decline.

As students in the University’s American Sign Language program enter their classroom, they immediately fall silent. The mode of communication shifts from vocal chords and shaped lips to hand gestures and emotive expressions.

Assistant Professor of Computer Science Ellie Pavlick joined the University in July and launched the Language Understanding and Representation lab. She aims to explore collaboration and interdisciplinary work at Brown.

A simple conversation between two friends can be understood by a toddler, but even the most sophisticated computer models struggle to grasp linguistic nuance. Assistant Professor of Computer Science Ellie Pavlick, who joined the department this July, hopes to change this.

Attendees at last Thursday’s exhibition “The Asian Migration: Movement Within and Outside” admired the many art pieces on display, which featured narratives that explored the Asian diaspora.
