Steve Gruber ’10 is a backup point guard who averages just four points a game. But in the waning seconds against Princeton on Saturday night, his record was irrelevant. Gruber sunk two clutch free throws with eight seconds remaining, helping the Bears (10-17, 4-6 Ivy) grab an upset victory over the title-contending Tigers (16-7, 7-2).

Most people go to college to get away from their younger siblings, but it ended up being a different story for the Sullivan brothers, who share more than just the basketball floor here at Brown. Peter Sullivan ’11 and Matt Sullivan ’13 are the first brother duo to start together at Brown since Don Tarr ’65 and Dave Tarr ’66 lettered together for two years, according to Brown’s Sports Information Office.

Athlete of the break: Basketball forward Tucker Halpern ’13

Though most of the school got five-and-a-half weeks off for winter break, the men’s basketball team took just four days off. The hard work paid off for forward Tucker Halpern ’13. The rookie had two career-high nights, scoring 22 points against Wagner on Jan. 4 and another 26 points a week later against Quinnipiac. He was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week on Jan. 11 — and he has now been named the Herald Athlete of the Break.
