Students move into new Health and Wellness Dorm for summer semester

The University welcomed residents into a new 162-bed dormitory and wellness center located on 450 Brook St. May 9, marking the opening of the first new dorm in nearly 35 years. The building will also house the University’s health and wellness services. 

Students assigned to live in the Omni were notified of their assignment Dec. 6 in an email from ResLife. The University selected the Omni after also considering the Mariott and Hilton properties downtown.

Brown leases rooms in Omni Providence Hotel to house students for spring semester

The University has leased rooms in the Omni Providence Hotel to house students during the spring semester, University Spokesperson Brian Clark wrote in an email to The Herald. 

Students placed in hotels will be housed in single-occupancy rooms in areas of the properties that will be occupied only by other Brown students.

The University will lease hotel rooms in the Hilton, Marriott and Omni properties in downtown Providence for all students on the spring housing waitlist who express interest in the option, according to a Dec. 4 email from the Office of Residential Life.

With the semester coming to a close, students try to plan for the spring while handling uncertainties about housing spots and public health concerns.

The waitlist ranks students hoping to live on campus next semester according to class year and whether they have taken leave. Juniors currently studying remotely have priority, followed by remote sophomores, and then seniors, juniors and sophomores currently on leave.

Students’ residence halls are gradually being repopulated as students return to campus. RPLs work to promote health and safety in the on-campus community.

Prior to students’ return to campus this fall, the University has upheld its policy requiring students to spend six semesters living on campus, and promised to uphold their agreement to house all students who request it.

The new university housing complex is planned to be located on the lot that currently holds Bagel Gourmet. Adding close to four hundred beds to the inventory of housing available to students, the new residence hall will help ensure that the University can continue to provide housing in accordance with the six semester on-campus living requirement.

On Feb. 18, the University announced a plan for a new residential community that will add an estimated 130,000 square feet and 375 beds to the University’s undergraduate housing inventory.

Students were dissatisfied when placed in converted lounges and kitchens during the summer housing assignments. Some were later granted off campus permission or placed into standard dorm rooms.

Daphne Li-Chen ’21 opened her summer assignment email in August to find she was placed in a triple in Vartan Gregorian Quad apart from her requested roommate, and only later did she discover that her assigned bedroom was formerly a communal kitchen.
