Students plan for the spring semester amidst uncertainties about on-campus housing and COVID-19

The waitlist ranks students hoping to live on campus next semester according to class year and whether they have taken leave. Juniors currently studying remotely have priority, followed by remote sophomores, and then seniors, juniors and sophomores currently on leave.

Students’ residence halls are gradually being repopulated as students return to campus. RPLs work to promote health and safety in the on-campus community.

Prior to students’ return to campus this fall, the University has upheld its policy requiring students to spend six semesters living on campus, and promised to uphold their agreement to house all students who request it.

The new university housing complex is planned to be located on the lot that currently holds Bagel Gourmet. Adding close to four hundred beds to the inventory of housing available to students, the new residence hall will help ensure that the University can continue to provide housing in accordance with the six semester on-campus living requirement.

On Feb. 18, the University announced a plan for a new residential community that will add an estimated 130,000 square feet and 375 beds to the University’s undergraduate housing inventory.

Students were dissatisfied when placed in converted lounges and kitchens during the summer housing assignments. Some were later granted off campus permission or placed into standard dorm rooms.

Daphne Li-Chen ’21 opened her summer assignment email in August to find she was placed in a triple in Vartan Gregorian Quad apart from her requested roommate, and only later did she discover that her assigned bedroom was formerly a communal kitchen.

Approximately 160 students will receive on-campus housing for the 2019-20 academic year through the summer assignment process.

Affected students were originally given 72 hours to move out of Buxton after returning to campus this spring, but now have a more flexible timeline.

The University has suspended the housing privileges of Buxton International House until fall 2020 after finding the program house had “again violated the student code of conduct while on deferred suspension from a previous violation,” wrote President Christina Paxson P’19 in a Jan. 18 letter.

Though students discovered chipping lead paint on the interior walls of Donovan House, Environmental Health and Safety concluded that it is unlikely to cause lead exposure.
