A statue of Christopher Columbus on the intersection of Elmwood and Reservoir avenues was painted red overnight Sunday, the Providence Journal reported. A sign that read “Stop Celebrating Genocide” accompanied the coated statue.

The Senate voted Wednesday evening to expand the Senate President’s power over committee appointments. But the new rule faced backlash over what was called “a power grab” by Senator Sam Bell PhD ‘16.

After four hours of argument over changes to Rhode Island Senate rules Wednesday night, the senators voted to approve a bill that will effectively end filibusters and increase the Senate President’s power over committee assignments. The rewritten R.I. Senate rules bill passed the Senate floor 33-3.
