R.I. college students demand expanded diversity initiatives

Students and faculty members at other colleges in Rhode Island are also working to have their voices heard on their campuses.

Rebecca Cumberbatch, a Rhode Island School of Design student, addressed a crowd of RISD students and faculty members during a demonstration at Market Square Wednesday. The gathering, which lasted over three hours, saw participants share experiences with prejudice on campus. Demonstrators also called on the administration to release a diversity action plan.

RISD students marched through 40-degree weather at 11 a.m. Saturday carrying picket signs to protest victim-blaming and slut-shaming.

Techstyle Haus — a solar house designed by students from Brown, the Rhode Island School of Design and the University of Applied Sciences in Germany, is made from a flexible fiberglass material called Sheerfill. Construction of the house began in January 2014 in a parking lot in Cranston, R.I.
