COVID-19 shuts down Brown study abroad programs

When Halle Fowler ’21 arrived in Australia in mid-February for her semester abroad, she looked forward to excursions to the Great Barrier Reef, the Northern Territories, Western Australia, New Zealand and more.

RISD canceled its study abroad program in Rome, while the University canceled its “Brown in Bologna” program due to coronavirus fears.

Brown, RISD respond to growing coronavirus concerns

The University and the Rhode Island School of Design recently unveiled new immediate and long-term policies concerning the coronavirus outbreak, according to interviews, emails and a town hall hosted by RISD administrators.

In response to the spread of coronavirus, students enrolled in the Brown in Bologna program have been told to leave Italy, with the option of taking online courses or withdrawing entirely. At press time, there were over 800 cases of coronavirus in Italy, and 21 deaths.
