One of the most frustrating things about pursuing my PhD is having to explain to friends and family members, repeatedly, what I actually do all day. No, I do not have the summer off. Yes, I do get paid. No, I am not going to be a neurosurgeon when this is all over (sorry, Mom).

University graduate students gathered on the steps of Campus Center Thursday. The group protested a proposed ruling that would give private universities the power to not recognize graduate student unions.

Grad students protest proposed NLRB rule

“Solidarity forever, solidarity forever, solidarity forever, the Union makes us strong,” graduate students sang  in support of unionization at the steps of the Stephen Robert ’62 Campus Center. Grad students and community members participated in a rally midday Thursday, many donning blue “Union Strong” T-shirts.

SUGSE held a rally April 8 ahead of the start of negotiations with the University to establish a collective bargaining agreement. The University and SUGSE will meet every three weeks for the rest of the negotiations.

Following graduate students’ vote to unionize in late November, bargaining committees representing Stand Up for Graduate Student Employees and the University began negotiations toward a collective bargaining agreement earlier this month.

A bias report submitted through the new system will be reviewed by faculty, staff, undergraduates, graduate students and medical students. It is unclear whether graduate or medical students will be paid for this work.

The Graduate Student Council heard updates on a bias incident reporting system and clarified the timeline for unionization at its last general body meeting of the fall semester.

Once the election results have been certified, the University will recognize Stand Up for Graduate Student Employees and the American Federation of Teachers as "the exclusive representatives of graduate assistants in the bargaining unit on employment matters," wrote Provost Richard Locke P’18 and Dean of the Graduate School Andrew Campbell.
