As a first-year, I often hear upperclassmen ask, “What is it like? How are you taking it?” Although I can’t speak for my entire class, here’s my take as a first-year on campus: From my one online class in the fall to a full course load on campus, my first-year spring has been challenging so far.

Students with 21st birthdays during the COVID-19 pandemic have seen trips and parties cancelled, leading to new, creative ways of celebrating in quarantine. “It just ended up being back in my house,” said Morgan Awner ’21, who previously planned to celebrate while on a trip to Patagonia.

The weekend of her 21st birthday, Morgan Awner ’21 was supposed to be in Patagonia, hiking and taking in the breathtaking views of the region’s infamous glaciers, fjords and mountains, on her study abroad program’s first trip out of Santiago, Chile.
