On April 15, two members of The Herald’s business team had the opportunity to visit Ballet R.I., Rhode Island’s regional professional ballet company, for an open rehearsal for “Machinal: A Dance of Defiance.” The Ballet R.I. performance marks the first ballet adaptation of Sophie Treadwell's landmark 1928 stage play. In collaboration with the University of Rhode Island, the production will run from May 7–10 at Ballet R.I.'s Black Box Theatre, and May 14–17 at URI’s J Studio.
Ballet R.I. breathes new life into Treadwell’s theatrical masterwork. Co-adapted by Rachel Walshe and choreographed by Yury Yanowsky, resident choreographer for Ballet R.I., the ballet tells the story of a woman caught in the cold machinery of an oppressive society, where her body is controlled, and her choices are not her own.
Walshe and Yanowsky’s adaptation of “Machinal” truly pushes the boundaries of what can be portrayed without words, preserving the beauty of classical ballet while providing a clear and accessible narrative for those who aren’t familiar with the original story. As The Herald's team witnessed during the open rehearsal, each movement is choreographed with intense intention, and Yanowsky's use of the ensemble keeps themes of social pressure and emotion central to the piece. “Machinal” is different, intense and a remarkably raw statement about individuality and defiance.
Beyond the performance, “Machinal” is a testament to Rhode Island’s artistic community. Every element of the show has been built from the ground up by local artists. Original sets by Scenic Designer Renée Surprenant Fitzgerald, costumes by David Howard and music sourced expressly for this production showcase the artistic talent that Rhode Island has to offer. The production is led by Artistic Executive Director Kathleen Combes, who describes the work as an invitation for audience members to confront the timeless tension between individuality and the forces that seek to contain it.
Performances will be held in intimate spaces ideally suited to the production's raw, close-quarters intensity. Student discounts are available to make ballet accessible to all. Visit https://ci.ovationtix.com/34479 to purchase tickets. Don't miss this world premiere!
