This year, 104 seniors were elected to be members of the Rhode Island Alpha of Phi Beta Kappa.

Established in Williamsburg, Va., in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa is the nation’s oldest undergraduate academic honors society.

Brown’s chapter, one of only 270 in the nation, was founded in 1830, making it the seventh oldest chapter in the nation.

Members who are elected their junior year anonymously select the new senior members from a list of qualifying students provided by the Registrar. To qualify, a senior has to complete a minimum of 28 courses in their first seven semesters and earn a minimum of A or S with Distinction in a minimum of 23 of those classes, according to the Dean of the College’s website.
