One fan's praise for "Blocks"

To The Editor:

In the Oct. 1 edition of The Herald, Charles Beresfold announced in the last frame of his last cartoon the cancellation of the "Blocks" cartoon. I am appalled at this announcement. From a quick glance, "Blocks" may appear to be a poorly drawn cartoon, and it is; however, the presentation as a whole is funny due to the stick figure like drawing style combined with the silly yet intelligent dialogue. I believe that "Blocks" is the most sophisticated and funny comic strips in The Herald and thus should not be cancelled. "Blocks" is funny due to its combination of minimalism and the use of the absurd. The minimal nature of the "Blocks" cartoon is in Beresfold's drawing style and dialogue. They are neither fancy computer graphics nor flashy, intricate drawings to distract the reader from the heart of each comic strip.

Not only is the comic very funny, it pays homage to the classic comics with such characters as the Finster, which is homage to Woodstock of "Peanuts."

I read "Blocks" almost every day and it is the only cartoon that makes me smile every morning (like every day is chicken fingers day). For all of these reasons and because no Blocks is illogical, please un-cancel "Blocks."

Editor's note: "Blocks," by Charles Beresford '05, was not cancelled for failing to meet publication standards. Rather, that particular slot has been reserved for other Herald cartoonists like Nate Saunders '07 and Yu-Ting Liu '05, who, like Beresford, agreed to a 20-day run.
