Spring Weekend planners continue to discuss scheduling conflict

University student activities officials and representatives from numerous student organizations met Thursday night to discuss Spring Weekend's scheduling conflict with the Jewish holiday of Passover but did not arrive at a firm resolution.

Ricky Gresh, director of student activities, said individual campus organizations will discuss the proposed scheduling alternatives among their members before finalizing any recommendations.

Over the past weeks, the University has reached out to student leaders from the Brown Concert Agency and Class Coordinating Board, among other groups, to find ways to maximize community participation during Spring Weekend while respecting the religious needs of Brown's Jewish population, Gresh said.

Talks will continue into next week with a possibility of a decision by the end of the week, Gresh said.

Sentiments on campus have been mixed due to a lack of knowledge about possible alternatives.

"I don't have enough knowledge of the University's alternatives to make an informed judgment," Ben Arfmann '07 said.

Some students are unsure of the degree to which events can be shifted, given the short notice.

"Ideally, there wouldn't be a conflict," Matt Sawh '08 said. "It's worth trying (to reschedule), but I'm not hopeful as to whether confirmed acts can be changed."
