Writing Fellows Program remains a well-appreciated and vital resource

To the Editor:

As the Director of Brown's Writing Fellows Program, I am always grateful for The Herald's coverage of our work, and I appreciate your lead article and editorial on the subject of writing at Brown.

While it is true that our resources are stretched thin this semester, I take that as a positive sign that the Brown faculty members are committed to supporting the writing instruction of their students.

The program's founding principle is that all writers would benefit from starting to write papers early while receiving helpful feedback on drafts of their essays. In spite of the fact that some students may resist writing more than one draft of a paper, end-of-semester evaluations indicate that 90 percent of students in Writing Fellows courses find us an effective and welcome resource.

We try to reach as many undergraduates as possible. The University must balance many competing budgetary claims, and we are grateful for the continuing support of the Dean of the College.
