At year's first UCS meeting, optimism and fresh faces

The Undergraduate Council of Students' first meeting of the semester was filled with excitement and preparation for action.

"I am optimistic about everything (UCS) can achieve this year for students," said UCS President Brian Bidadi '06.

Many students hoping to become part of UCS this year were in attendance. "I'm excited about the interest," Bidadi said. "New members on the council bring a new perspective."

Vice President Sarah Saxton-Frump '07 said that the number of transfer students in attendance was "awesome."

First-year representative voting results will be announced on Friday and internal elections for vacant at-large representative positions and an executive board position will be held at next week's meeting. Nick Monu '06, the chair of the academic and administrative affairs committee, left his position over the summer because he was concerned that he "couldn't give UCS his full 110 percent" while writing a senior thesis.

Committee chairs gave an overview of issues they hope to work on this year, which include universal dormitory key card access, expanding students' summer storage options, improving common spaces for students on campus, getting more student feedback, streamlining the processes for creating student groups and continuing the reorganization of club sports.

UCS got a head start this year, as during the summer "most of the (executive) board was in Providence making improvements and researching new policies," Bidadi said.
