Danis '04 makes NHL debut with shutout win

Canadiens pick up 2-0 victory behind rookie goaltender

Yann Danis '04 notched a shutout victory in his NHL debut Wednesday night, as his Montreal Canadiens defeated the Atlanta Thrashers, 2-0. Danis was named the first star of the game after turning away 32 shots.

"I imagined it," Danis told the Associated Press. "It was a good start for me. Our team scored the first goal, so my confidence was there. ... But it's only one game."

Jan Bulis and Saku Koivu had Montreal's goals.

Danis, a former Hobey Baker finalist at Brown, got the nod in place of the team's starting goalie, Jose Theodore, who was given the night off to rest. Danis is the third Montreal goalie to win his debut with a shutout. Wayne Thomas performed the feat in 1973, as did Bob Perreault in 1955.
