To the Editor:
The television commercials from Save Our State - especially the one which states that Harrah's wants us to change our constitution - claim that Harrah's doesn't care about our state.
Get real: Rhode Islanders changed our constitution in the 1970s to pave the way for the state lottery, and in 1992 the General Assembly voted to allow video slots at Lincoln Park and Newport Grand as a so-called extension of the state lottery. Now, we the people need to change the constitution again. Harrah's isn't changing our constitution, we are.
This SOS commercial attempts to completely eliminate the Narragansett Indian tribe from the message as well as the tribe's feelings toward Rhode Island. They are Rhode Islanders also, native Rhode Islanders, and they care. I would like to ask the former governor and members of Save Our State if they think Kerzner International, owners of Lincoln Park, and a Bahamas-based company, care about our state. Former Gov. Lincoln Almond and Gov. Donald Carcieri '65 need to stop the hypocrisy. Let the people of Rhode Island speak when they support Ballot Question 1 on Nov. 7.
