This Saturday is Veterans Day, a day both for remembrance and for tribute.
A day to remember all the soldiers that have died for our country, including those who were members of the Brown community. We remember all the men who gave their lives and we remember Dorothy Dowell, Pembroke '18, the lone female; we remember those who died in World War I and those who died as recently as 1997; and we remember faculty, staff and students. We remember all of these people, and their sacrifice.
At noon tomorrow, a group of faculty, students and staff, including veterans from each category, will assemble on the steps of Faunce House and read a list of Brown's war dead from the last century. Ronald Vanden Dorpel AM'71, senior vice president for University advancement, will speak about how his Brown education influenced his service, and how both have informed his work for Brown. Then we will proceed to Soldiers Arch and the war memorial for a laying of wreathes, a prayer and taps, the traditional military bugle melody at such events. Names of the deceased are already posted underneath the arch. Thanks to Associate Professor of Sociology Ann Dill and Project Director for Campus Life and Student Services Kate Wolford for providing this description and to the Office of Student Life and the Faculty Executive Committee for helping plan the event.
We will also pay tribute to two more groups. One is the families of veterans, who have served the country courageously in their own way. The other is the current crop of veterans here at Brown. A list of their names is printed below. I apologize profoundly to anyone who was left out; please know that you are in our thoughts. Thanks go to Senior Associate Director of the Brown News Service Tracie Sweeney, Reservations Receptionist at Conference Services Basma Samira, the Human Resources Department and every person who helped assemble this list. Each person's name is followed by their University duties and their years of service.
