Indy celebrates 17 years of readership, non-University-subsidized existence

The College Hill Independent, a widely read weekly newspaper produced by Brown and Rhode Island School of Design students, celebrated 17 years of non-University-subsidized existence last night at the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Providence.

"Tonight, we celebrate 17 years of providing a popular, independent voice in the Brown and RISD communities, free of influence from administrators," managing editor Soraya Savage '07 told a group of about 150 students, who were not dressed ironically.

Known affectionately by its readers as the Indy, the popular alternative newspaper, known for its unpretentious writing, relevant articles and stellar first-hand reporting, was founded in 1990 by a group of Brown and RISD students. The Indy still bills itself as a joint Brown-RISD publication, with RISD students comprising about half of its editorial and art staff.

The Indy staff, which is also good at kickball, won a Pulitzer Prize for College Journalism in 2005 for layout.

Just kidding! Our job is accurately covering the Brown community. Except on April Fool's Day
