Passafuime '12 top Ivy rookie for w. hoops

Three solid performances for the women's basketball team over the past week earned Hannah Passafuime '12 the title of Ivy League Rookie of the Week. Men's water polo player Mike Gartner '09 also garnered accolades recently, earning Northern Division Player of the Week honors on Nov. 24.

Passafuime started her streak with a nine-point outing against URI, then helped the Bears to their first win of the season over host Maine at the Dead River Company Classic Tournament on Friday. Against the Black Bears, Passafuime scored five points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out two assists in the Bears' 65-52 victory. On Saturday, in the championship game against West Virginia, she came off the bench to lead Brown in scoring, totaling 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including 3-of-7 from behind the arc.

For the season, she is second on the team in scoring, averaging 8.2 points per game on 45-percent shooting from the field. Passafuime will need to continue her hot shooting against tough competition this week, as Bruno takes on Boston University on the road today before returning to host the Brown Bear Classic, which will include Long Island University and UMass.

Mike Gartner '09 scored nine goals in three games en route to leading the No. 17 men's water polo team to a fourth place finish at the Eastern Championships. His outstanding play drew the player of the week nod for Gartner, who was also named to the All-North and All-East First Teams this season.

In Brown's 12-6 victory over Division III No. 1 Johns Hopkins University, Gartner tallied four goals, one assist, three ejections drawn and a steal. He also added two goals and drew six ejections in Brown's 14-9 loss to No. 13 Princeton, and scored three goals in an 11-8 defeat against St. Francis College in the third-place game.
